Allusion

Type:

Poetic Device

Description:

An indirect reference to some cultural tidbit, such as a Greek god or cultural event.

Impressions:

This can be a most dangerous device. While overuse of alliteration or forced rhymes might make a reader cringe, too many or too obscure allusions can make the reader stop reading. A poet should think very carefully about audience while planning allusions.

Status:

Complete
