Learn the emotions and how to evoke them.

Let’s face it, an awful lot of poetry is based on emotions and evoking emotions. The poet who knows the difference between bathos and pathos and can decide which emotions to evoke when is well-armed. Find a piece of writing that evokes an emotion in you. What makes that particular emotion come out? Would this writing evoke the same emotion in everyone? Why might people react differently to it?
