Be aware of your personal philosophy.

Steve Gillette suggests that the first step that you, as a poet, should take is to become aware of your personal philosophy and how that philosophy directs your work. Many poets of the past have used philosophy as the basis of their work, such as Emerson, Thoreau, and the other Transcendentalists.
