Know the poetic structural options.

It isn’t all just free verse in modern poetry, despite what some folks think. But even in free verse, some structure can be applied. So, to become a better poet, familiarize yourself with the structural elements used in formal poetry. Some examples are: Rhyme, Repetition, Pivots, Hidden Words.
