Think like an alien.

Pretend you have just arrived on Earth, and you are seeing everything around you for the first time. How are things wrong? That blue sky should be yellow? What are all of these objects and creatures and stationary living things? Are they anything like what you had back home? What makes sense? What is less efficient than it should be?

Discovering what to write about using this sort of thinking doesn’t mean you have to write the poem from the alien’s perspective. It can also be applied more locally. Are you middle class? What do you see about the way that richer people live that is different? Are there different customs and mores? How about the people poorer than you? There is ample room for adjustment from the initial idea of being alien.
