Get a metaphorical dictionary.

You can get a lot of tools for writing poetry, but one of the best tools is a dictionary of metaphors. Now, not all dictionaries of metaphors are called that, although using the search terms dictionary and metaphor will bring up several entries on Amazon.com. Many of these wonderful books go by other names and categories, such as dream interpretation, symbol interpretation, psychological archetypes, etc. There are also books, such as Charles Fillmore’s Metaphysical Bible Dictionary, that are full of equations that can be the basis of your poetry. These books all tie things together, many of them as the subconscious does. You might not find many metaphors fresh to the world, but you might find some exciting new ideas for poems, especially if you do series work.
