Know your audience.

In marketing terms, you have to segment your markets and know what each market likes. Don’t figure you’ll be a popular poet among the art crowd if you dare to write using such passé techniques as standardized verse forms, rhyme, rhythm and such other things that will just indicate how naïve a poet you are. Unless of course, you can manage to make fun of the verse forms and naïve poets through using them. On the other hand, don’t figure on winning over your average Joe with avant-garde forms and poetry. Find who your audience is and deliver poetry that is within the realms of their expectations. This is true with either performing or selling books or chapbooks. You can stretch an audience a little, but they are made of rubber, and they will snap back at you, if you dare to stretch them too far.
