Know your collaborator.

Put your pants on before going out in a crowd. You might as well figure the two statements are equal. First, know your collaborator enough to know they are at least relatively honest. Know they won’t steal your work or do something similar. Second, you have to know enough about them to interact successfully. You will be giving suggestions to each other, and you have to be able to do so without offending each other, or the poem or song will never be finished.
