Study the characters around you.

“Puns and jokes are okay but they lose their oomph after a time or two. Tune in to what makes you laugh in real life. Often it’s character development (or lack thereof).” -- Peter Berryman

Peter is primarily a writer of light verse, and this is the “Levitation” section, but this tip really goes well with any type of writing. It is the study of humans that can make your characters real, comedic, tragic, and unbelievably believable.
