Take a different perspective.

Instead of looking at the world as everyone else does, find a new angle, an overlooked angle. A wonderful example of this is Les Barker’s poem about the Titanic disaster. Instead of seeing it from the human angle, he sees it from the angle of a polar bear whose family was coming across to be in the zoo with him. So, the polar bear goes into the offices where the families of those on the boat are congregating to find out if their loved ones survived, and he asks, “Have you heard any news of the iceberg? My family was on it, you see...” A different perspective can be both enlightening and funny for your audience.
