Keep a voice recorder (or notepad) handy.

Always carry either a voice recorder or notepad for ideas. This allows you to record ideas that come to you before you lose them. For songwriters, you can also get the tunes down that way and practice two part songs or rounds to get a better feel for them.

A voice recorder tends to be easier to handle in the car. Neither is very good in the shower.
